How To Reduce Your Heating Bills

Posted on

During the winter months, your energy bills can skyrocket as you rely on your central heating unit to provide an adequate amount of constant heating to maintain your home's comfort levels. However, this can become financially burdensome over time. Thankfully, there are a number of things that you can do to help your home retain heat and cut down on your high energy bills.

Programmable Thermostat

One of the most important things you can do to reduce your overall energy bills is to have a programmable thermostat installed by a heating professional. These thermostats allow you to tell your central heating unit when to turn on and off based off of your work and sleeping habits. This helps to reduce the amount of energy that you waste over the winter, but also allows you to program your heating to maximize your comfort levels. For instance, you can program your heater to come on a half hour before you come home and turn off a half hour before you go to bed, ensuring that you stay warm and comfortable during your time at home without having to leave the heater on all day.

You should also invest in heavy curtains throughout your home. Thick flannel and fabric curtains that are hung on the windows and doors allow you to retain as much heat as possible. However, you should ensure that you leave them open during the day so that sunlight and the heat that it carries is able to flow into your home, but leave them closed during the night, when heat is most likely to leak out of your house. This allows you to leave your heating system on a lower setting, as heat will stay in your home for a longer period of time.

You should also make a concerted effort to clean off all radiators, heaters, and heating vents. Dust can block heat from distributing itself around your home, and can also place a greater amount of strain on your heating appliances, which will increase your energy bills and increase the amount of wear and the risk of a malfunction on your heating system. By regularly cleaning and maintaining all aspects of your heating system, and having a professional come in for a general checkup and cleaning, you can ensure that your home's heating system is working as efficiently as possible, keeping your energy bills to a minimum.
